VACCINATION

Keeping your dog healthy is one of the most important responsibilities you have as a pet owner and sadly pets are sometimes abandoned to shelters because their human is not able to properly care for them.  If you’re reading this, you’re most likely not one of those humans.  Most of us want the very best for our beloved pets, and with the myriad of information, it can be overwhelming and confusing.  I personally like to have multiple sources of information and I don’t put 100% of my trust into any one source.  I have a “Western Medicine” (traditional) veterinarian, as well as a “Functional Medicine” (holistic) vet.  I listen to the opinions of both of my vets, as well as look on-line for more insight on any given issue - from multiple professionals, as well as everyday people who have learned what works (or doesn’t work) for their pet.

DR. KAREN BECKER on THE TRUTH ABOUT PET VACCINES

HOLISTIC VET DR. PATRICIAN JORDAN

Holistic veterinarian Dr. Patrician Jordan says:  “The truth is the majority of vets are not going to change until they are forced to – which isn’t likely to happen due to politics and due to the lack of concern by the one entity that could protect the public and ensure animal welfare: the individual state veterinary medical boards. This change will have to come from the public.  They have to stop allowing the over-servicing.”

HOLISTIC VACCINATION SCHEDULE (EXAMPLE)

I’ll share the vaccine schedule of my holistic vet, but urge you to do what you feel is right for you and your pet.

For puppies:

  • No vaccination before 12 weeks of age

    • I only work with a breeder who will respect my wish to not vaccinate, deworm or administer any unnecessary medications before 12 weeks of age.

    • For a natural de-wormer, I give my puppies ground pumpkin seeds, mixed in with their food.

  • 12 week parvovirus

    • Not in a combo shot

    • The appropriate amount is administered according to the size of dog.

  • 14 week parvo/distemper

    • Not in combination with any other vaccines

    • The appropriate amount is administered according to the size of dog.

  • 16 week titer

For adult dogs:

  • Titer test every 3 years or as you deem necessary.

If my vet encourages a vaccine, treatment or medication that I’m unsure about, (unless it’s an emergency situation) I’ll often wait to make the decision so I don’t feel pressured into anything I haven’t thoroughly looked into.  I believe most doctors have good intentions according to their education and experience, but when it comes down to it, our pets are our ultimate responsibility.  Sometimes, despite the best efforts to avoid disease or accidents, things can happen.  Instead of placing blame on anyone, we can learn from each other, as well as our own experiences, and strive to do even better in the future.

In the book, “What Vets Don’t Tell You About Vaccines”, Catherine O'Driscoll gives you the information that vets won't or can't tell you. Her aim is to share the truth so that dog lovers everywhere can make informed choices about the well-being of the pets they treasure.
